REQUIRED LISTENING: a musician's personal notes about favorite artists.
THE ALLMAN BROTHERS
Hitting the Note.
Thirty-four years after their first album, the Allmans prove that if you have passion and soul it never leaves your body. When thinking through their body of work,
I have a hard time finding many that I love more than this record. The combination of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on guitar is absolutely amazing. Derek's masterful
slide guitar playing belies his young age and Warren lets him be the star of the show. Gregg Allman has long been one of my favorite singers (both his solo work and
that with the Allman Brothers). He's cleaned up his life and is as great as ever. This CD has many highlights, including: "Old Before My Time" (the moment
Gregg's vocal hits you, you can feel his life shoot right through you), "High Cost of Low Living" (with an incredible Derek Trucks slide solo),
"Desdemona" (classic Allman's Jazz & Blues) and "Old Friend" (Warren and Derek creating an acoustic Blues CLASSIC). It's nice to see that
one of the finest bands of all time is too proud to rest on their laurels. Hitting the Note is definitely worth your time.
