REQUIRED LISTENING: a musician's personal notes about favorite artists.

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.
I figure this is my favorite album of the 90s because it merges rock and soul PERFECTLY. This record was quite a jump up from their first release, "Shake Your Money Maker." Southern Harmony starts out rocking with "Sting Me," and reaches an epic pitch with three heavy hitters in a row -- "Black Moon Creeping," "No Speak No Slave," and "My Morning Song." Devastating, dynamic and determined! Chris Robinson's passionate singing alongside the dual guitars of Marc Ford and Rich Robinson work off each other perfectly. The combination of all that PLUS Steve Gorman, one of rock's best drummers, ...make for a sound that made me move to Atlanta! Other great cuts from the CD include "Thorn In My Pride," and "Sometimes Salvation" making The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion a lasting highlight to a band that folded way too early.

Update: the band reformed. Good news.
