REQUIRED LISTENING: a musician's personal notes about favorite artists.

SRV (boxed set).
Stevie Ray Vaughan was all at once ferocious and beautiful--playing with all of the heart he could muster. In this set you can chart his growth and confidence, and really hear the amalgamation of styles that influenced him. Equal parts Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Lonnie Mack and Kenny Burrell, Stevie persevered in a time (the 80's) when popular music was about as far away from the blues as possible.

This box set is really a treat in that it has a LOT of unreleased performances. Highlights from this three CD, one DVD set include: "Voodoo Chile," "Lookin' Out the Window," "Tightrope," and an unbelievable version of "Little Wing/3rd Stone From the Sun."

August 27, 1990 is a day I will never forget. The hole in my heart was as big as if I had lost a member of my own family. I find it hard to get as excited about any other player since Stevie passed.
